Then and Now

Mavel’s mission statement was formulated at a Snowmass, Colorado meeting of management and investors in 1997. Since that time, the company has evolved from a startup in a transitioning economy to a global leader in its niche market. The mission, however, remains the guiding principal in adapting strategies to changing markets and global trends. Mavel was founded in 1990 as a small hydro engineering company and is now an ISO certified innovative engineering driven manufacturing company with 200 employees, two production facilities, and 100 proprietary turbine designs providing customers with complete (water-to-wire) equipment packages. Mavel’s first installation was a 100 kW Kaplan turbine in Germany in 1993. Now, the company has over 500 Mavel turbines in operation at over 300 sites in 43 countries on five continents.

Mavel Management Board

Mavel‘s four managing partners have worked together for almost a quarter of a century. All are significant shareholders and all hold both regional sales and functional responsibilities. The managing partners lead a team of people based in Europe and North America. Included in the total, are 60 hydraulic, mechanical, electrical or civil engineers. These engineers, with extensive experience in hydroelectric power, work throughout the company in design, production, service, sales, R&D, purchasing and administration.

Pelton Water Turbine

Mavel designs and manufactures turbines at one of its two Czech Republic state-of-the art production facilities. The company's management, engineering and manufacturing headquarters is located in Benesov, CZ, 50 kilometers southeast of Prague.  The second facility is in Rajec-Jestrebi, near Brno. In 2014, Mavel completed a five-year capital investment program which included a rehabilitation of the production hall, construction of a new administrative wing and material storage hall, initiation of a new research and development program and purchase of a 5-axis milling machine and 6-axis prototype machining center. Today, Mavel has 12,900 SM (140,000 sf) of production and administration space, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, OHSAS 18001:2007 and ISO 3834-2:2005 certifications, and an experienced, highly skilled workforce.

Boston Headquarters of Mavel

Mavel was founded in 1990 and raised capital from a consortium of American-European investors in 1997. The company remains 50% American and 50% Czech owned. In 2010, having obtained a market leadership position in Europe, Mavel management decided to form a wholly-owned subsidiary Mavel Americas, Inc. (MAC) to oversee activities in the Americas. With offices in Boston, MA, MAC provides support to Mavel in the areas of marketing, sales, purchasing, project management and site services. By 2018, MAC had completed or signed contracts for up to 30 projects in North, Central and South America.
